Review on J Tech Digital JTD UH302E Express Adapter by Marc Cahoon

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Not at the full speed of USB 3.0, but still significantly faster than USB 2.0

I used this to connect an old laptop with only USB 2.0 ports to a new Seagate external hard drive with USB 3.0 ports connect skills. My laptop is a Lenovo T500 with Windows 7 64 bit and Ubuntu Linux 12.04 dual boot. First with Windows 7, after copying and pasting around 20GB of data from Windows Explorer to an external hard drive with older USB 2.0 ports, I saw data transfer rates of around 20MB/s. Using the same hard drive but connected to a J-Tech USB 3.0 adapter, the data transfer rate was approximately 52 MB/s. Moving the other way and copying from the external hard drive back to my laptop's hard drive, I saw about 30MB/s with USB 2.0 and about 46MB/s with the J-Tech adapter. I also tested the adapter with Ubuntu Linux. The adapter worked right away when I booted up Ubuntu. No drivers or software required. However, I did not see the same speed as when using Windows 7. I only saw about 33 MB/s both ways. All in all I am satisfied with this product. No, it doesn't get full USB 3.0 speeds, but I see a significant speed increase over my old USB 2.0 ports. A full backup of my laptop's hard drive to an external drive can save hours.
