Review on Hopkins FloTool 42003MI 16 Quart Container by Joz Lowe

Great idea, cheap production and false advertising

This is a great idea, but implemented cheaply. I wanted to use it to change the oil in my car, so a leak in the reservoir was a problem. I have read many reviews of the 16 liter Flo tool and have seen constant complaints of leaks. I ordered it anyway, hoping that wouldn't happen to me. However, I did fill it with water after unpacking it to check for leaks. There are two sources of leakage on this container. The first leak is at the main oil drain. Since the threads are made of soft plastic with no rubber O-ring, the water flowed out in a steady stream (see photo). The second weak point lies in the air valve, which is also not airtight and is difficult to keep closed even without liquid pressure in the container (see container, ie there are no micro-holes big enough for water to seep in. I have several problems with marketing and the sale of this product. Firstly it is advertised as 'Made in America' which I associate with quality. It is not a quality product. Secondly it is stated that it 'holds' 16 liters of liquid. Given this design I believe I don't think it could hold 16 liters of liquid without leaking, however, it can hold liquid until you fill it through the main drain, but then it's not really a 16 liter container as you can't use the last one effectively a third of the container because used oil and contaminants flow out of it. Third, it claims to be "leakproof" which is not true. Fourth, the price was right so I and a lot e others were tempted to buy it. I will not let a company go through their false advertising for nothing because they have set a competitive price for their product. Please charge me another $1 and redesign the connector holes with better materials. I will pay for quality, especially if it means saving jobs in America.

Pros
  • Great design
Cons
  • Not bad
