Review on ๐ŸŒ๏ธ Enhance Your Golf Game with Garmin Approach Z80: Laser Range Finder and 2D Course Overlays by Jermaine Rhodes

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Laser distance is not always accurate - it is necessary to aim several times and confirm with sprinkler heads.

While others have commented on the battery life, I haven't had this issue. However, I've played over 40 rounds on the Z80 since receiving it as a Christmas present. I play the vast majority of my rounds on a club pitch that I know well. My main problem with the device is that I don't trust the laser readings. I don't know if this is due to the manufacturer's decision to "help out" with the laser measurement using GPS knowledge, or the lag of the imaging system versus the laser system (the image is not optical, but rather a viewfinder-like camera/ camcorder systems). The distance reported by the Z80 can vary by 10-20+ yards (or more as others have pointed out) on initial readings. Since I am aware of frequent incorrect reports, I take several measurements on my home square until I am sure of the measurement. While it's not perfect, on my home course I already have a good idea of the distance before I see an object, so I can "walk past" it. However, this range finder will not be in my pocket when I travel to other courses. I was particularly impressed by the integration of GPS and laser with this rangefinder, which allows me to better assess unknown routes. Due to an erroneous reporting from the laser system, I cannot trust this unit on unfamiliar courses.

Pros
  • Sturdy design
Cons
  • I don't remember, but there was something
