I bought two of these small and light Amprobe ST-102B outlet testers to send to my siblings to test their regular outlets and their GFCI outlets. I have tested both units I purchased with GFCI outlets and non-GFCI outlets in my home and both testers work as intended. transition from hot to earth. This type of outlet is required by the National Electrical Code for almost all outlets within 6 feet of a water source, as well as all outdoor outlets. (Sometimes a regular outlet is protected by a GFCI in your electrical box.) GFCI outlets and GFCI circuit breakers help prevent electrocution death. This device is a TESTER used to quickly tell you if the outlet in your home is plugged in correctly and to ensure that the GFCI is triggered when you press the small black button in the center of this tester. You must then RESET the GFCI circuit breaker (if equipped) or press the RESET button on the GFCI outlet to restore power to the outlet. If you have big fingers you might need something like a pencil to push the reset button on the GFCI socket far enough to reset it. If pressing the black test button on this tester does NOT trigger the GFCI socket, then either the GFCI socket needs to be replaced or (and I've seen this too many times) the GFCI socket is miswired (it could be wired). electrically backwards so that the socket works but does not switch off). In most locations, a single GFCI outlet can protect one or more "regular" outlets, sometimes located in other rooms or outside of outlets. If you use this tester on a regular outlet without GFCI, and you press the test button and the outlet goes dead, you need to find the GFCI outlet or CFGI circuit breaker that controls the power of the outlet you are using. just checked and reset. This tester has six different main connection results and a small chart or table on the top of the unit that tells you if the outlet is properly connected or if the circuit is dead or misconnected in four other ways. This tests both regular 110 to 120 volt outlets and GFCI outlets. The instructions state that the device will NOT check for the absence of a ground wire. This tester only TESTS your outlets - it WILL NOT SOLVE your problems. There are some good videos on the internet (youtube, dott com and others) that will help you get some electrical knowledge. As with anything electrical, if you don't know what you're doing, pay an electrician to diagnose and fix electrical problems. If you plug this tester into an outlet and can compare the bright light you see to what is shown in the diagram and if you can press the button, you can tell if your outlet is working. It is so easy!
