I have bare plywood steps on the stairs to the basement. There are 15 in the box but I only needed 14 because I have so many tiers. It is not attached with anything that could damage the ladder. and I have no idea what "stickiness" others are talking about because they definitely don't stick to wood; Basically you don't have to worry about damaging your stairs if you decide you don't like them or where you placed them as they are basically stair carpets for your steps. You won't slip and slide, but there's no serious glue either. My little one took it off with no problem.
