Is the 3.5mm plug too long?

I ordered this to connect a microphone (male XLR) to the external audio connector (male 3.5mm stereo) on a Canon camcorder. But the 3.5mm jack seems to be either too long or too big in diameter to fit fully inside the camcorder and let the external mic take over the internal mics. Other 3.5mm stereo jacks will fit easily. So, without another adapter, this device was not suitable for my needs.
