Works great when lowering the tailgate. Install it on the "stylish side" (stepped side) f150 '99; had to adjust the lower bracket on the tailgate a bit to fit - not sure if the average/casual installer would find the extra work easy - but with the right tools it does. Also the tailgate OEM wire needs to be on the driver's side be removed - again, the average person may find this less than desirable, but the tailgate is solid and well-made - ie. rear door without a cable. If you are looking for controlled tailgate opening I would recommend this product. Looks like a solid, well-made device - we'll see how it holds up over time. . .
