I've been looking long and hard for a practical, reliable and easy-to-install wall rack for our two touring bikes. I've seen quirky beautiful wood art, floor to ceiling hippos, some Rube Goldberg fixtures and even ones that only require a screw in the wall! Nothing really seemed to fit. Thought I'd have to make my own but decided to give it a try thanks to the guidance of some good reviews here. When I received the shelf I was pleased that it appeared a bit more massive than in the photo. The protective rubber gasket also seems more substantial than I expected. The mounting plate is decent, but not strong enough to leave room for error if one of the screws comes loose from the wall. We will assemble two touring bikes over 30 pounds. I used 1/4" X 2 1/2" screws with washers for extra strength. The holes in the mounting plate are sufficient for this. I drilled pilot holes in the wall and post to make it easier to screw the joists in and keep the wood intact. Installation was simple and straightforward and the included instructions were easy to follow. Now it's time to see if he can actually hold two touring bikes. I knew enough to look at them in opposite directions and with a little tweaking they both fit in easily. At over 30 pounds these bikes are on the edge of this rack's advertised capacity, but I was very surprised that even at this weight the rack still feels solid and secure, showing a little flex but still instilling a sense of confidence take everything except a big earthquake. I'll watch for signs of fatigue, but so far so good! All that, and the stand can be folded away when not in use.
