Soft enough wood for my budgie to chew for nest material, but strong enough not to fall apart completely. The holes were too close to the metal hole but I managed to find it inside so I could easily access the lid to look inside. Biggest complaint is the small dowel that goes under the door. The pen that came with the kit is too narrow, my budgie had a really hard time getting down on it from the top of the box or landing on it in flight (it was very difficult when it was near brickwork) so I had to do more put perch. nearby to help her get in and out of the box. She may not be able to reuse the box after tearing it up. We need to see how much she tore up. But it serves its purpose as a nesting site and at a reasonable price.
