Review on πŸ’‘ Enhanced Routing Capabilities with Actiontec GT701D Ethernet DSL Modem: Efficient Internet Connectivity Solution by Hank Mistretta

worked 20 minutes.

I was able to set up a modem with my ISP (Centrylink) with a few modem settings provided by my ISP. Everything worked great, even if it went through my wireless router. Then I tried to tweak things a bit. I manually edited the DHCP scope that the modem distributes, rebooted and nothing. Couldn't connect to modem no matter what I tried or how many systems I connected directly. Since there was nothing I could do, I tried resetting it. The reset button didn't work. I downloaded the instructions to my phone as it wasn't there to check I did everything right. The manual specifically says that you press and hold the button for 5-7 seconds and the power button should glow red on reset. I tried a dozen times, the modem didn't reset, whether I held it down for 5 seconds or 30 seconds didn't matter. Backed it up by RMAing ----- Another issue people should know about, wanted to make sure the firmware was up to date, couldn't find it anywhere in the modem's UI (before it failed of course). I found where to reset the system, where to upload a new firmware, it should show up everywhere, nada. I also had trouble finding the update download location on the Actiontec website during the 10 minutes of browsing. Any reputable company will find a way to test the firmware and distribute it easily. I'm not the smartest networking guru in the world, but if I'm having trouble finding and updating something, the layperson is in serious trouble. Updates to these things are pretty damn important, at least for security.
