This review is for the U28E590D, note the E instead of D, this is a newer version. I'm a Ruby/Java developer using a mid 2014 Macbook Pro with a 13" Retina. I have a TV to watch movies and video games, so I don't care about those aspects. I bought this monitor for one reason only - performance. If I had all the money in the world, I would buy an iMac 5K. I've also considered getting a 40-inch 4K TV instead of a monitor, but I'm glad I didn't make that mistake. This monitor comes with two cables - HDMI and DisplayPort. Neither is ideal for connecting a Mac to this monitor - you will definitely need the following cable - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00C7RIL3CI. Plug in an HDMI cable first and get full 4K resolution, but only at 30Hz. Now 30Hz can be used for a short time, it's not too bad, but you can feel a bit of lag and weight when moving the cursor and typing at full speed. With the above cable you get 60Hz at full 4K resolution. As soon as I plugged in the Mac, I got the default 1080p resolution with very smooth fonts, meaning the Mac scaled text and font sizes - not bad overall, but not for a programmer. So I switched to full 4K resolution and opened the project in the Atom editor. This screenshot is attached. Now many reviews say you have to enlarge the fonts because it's a 28 inch screen which isn't enough for 4K blah blah but I find this size and scaling amazing. My eyes are about 3 feet from the monitor and this text is very crisp and clear, allowing me to see my code much more fully than just on the laptop. Chrome (and other browsers) don't look that great on most websites at this resolution, so you should leave it as a small window. On the other hand, as all other reviews say, it's a TN panel, not an IPS panel. , so viewing angles are limited but can remain constant at around 45 degrees. This monitor has no sound or speakers, and the headphone jack is in the center back, which is very inconvenient to plug in real headphones, and the UX for volume control is also inconvenient. Samsung didn't think it through? Well they designed it to work with computer speakers like 2.1 systems. The audio interface would be much more convenient if the headphone jack and volume control were right at the front. Another point that an overly minimalist butt can suffer from is the USB port count of 0, keep this in mind if your keyboard or mouse uses USB. Given that a Full HD monitor this size costs four times less, is it worth it? 4 times more pixels? For a programmer sure.
