Revainrating 4 out of 5

You need to find a balance between table spacing and 4k upscaling to make the upgrade worthwhile.

Of course, the price goes down a week after I place my order. ;) Some observations that might help those considering getting this or any other 4k monitor.* Don't let the TN panel put you off if you're worried about viewing angles. The thing has great viewing angles. It's much better than the TN panels on my laptops. For example, on my 11-inch laptop, the TN panel is so bad that even looking straight up, a third of the screen starts to fade. This panel doesn't, even at its massive 28-inch size. Actually, I take it back. My particular U28E590D has a darker spot on the bottom left, about 1 inch wide and 3 inches high. I don't know if this will happen on all monitors or just mine, but it's not too obvious. *If you are using HDMI with this monitor, use port #2 as it will give you 60Hz. . The other runs at 30Hz, which is slow enough that the mouse pointer "skips frames" when moving. You don't want that, especially if the flashing lights are giving you a headache or seizures. * The settings joystick on the back is very easy to find and use without looking. Here are some settings I used to enhance the original image: Sharpness > 60, Brightness > 40, Contrast > 74, and MagicAngle > Group View. You should also try toggling the HDMI black level to make blacks more black than gray, although I only have that option when connected to port 1. Perhaps the new HDMI standard makes this feature unnecessary, or perhaps there is a quirk in the monitor that requires you to switch ports back and forth to change this setting; I do not know. But it does black better.* When connected to Windows 10, it automatically sets the scaling to 150%. This is good, because without scaling, everything becomes too small. Even at 150% scaling, everything (text, icons, scrollbars, etc.) is smaller than on a 24-inch 1080p monitor. I knew this was happening because the whole point of getting a 4k monitor was having more screen real estate for multiple images. Windows open side by side. The zoom will look jerky until you log out and back in, so make sure you do this as soon as you plug in the monitor. Don't start doing this right away as things will look weird/fuzzy until you log out and back in. You'll have to do this every time you change the scaling, or in this case Windows changed it for you.* The monitor size takes a bit of getting used to. from a 24" monitor. With this monitor, I have to turn my head to see everything. I could move it further back on my desk than my old monitor, but since the text and icons are smaller, it isn't either the best solution is to move it to the back. There needs to be some balance between distance and scale to make it worth upgrading from 1080p to 4k. * Ghosting occurs when scrolling. Line of text appears duplicated and blurry when scrolling. Changing setting the response time to "Standard" rather than "Faster" or "Fastest" seems to help. It might have been different if I had an AMD FreeSync graphics card; I have an Nvidia card instead .* I may not have used a monitor that wasn't really shiny in a while, but the screen looks like it was cleaned with a greasy rag you just i Have used in a skillet with pork chops. in. It's hard to describe, but it's almost like a fish that's scaly or shiny or speckled like a piece of tin that comes out of your oven. Rub a drop of vegetable oil into the corner of your current monitor and you'll see what I'm talking about. Only visible on a completely white screen, like this Revain review submission page. That's all I can think of. If anyone has any questions, please let me know.
