***Please note this is an IMPROVED U28-E-590D compared to the identical U28-D-590D. The main differences are that the HDMI 1 input (the first closest to the DisplayPort input) has been updated to HDMI 2.0 (from 1.4). In addition, this new version includes AMD FREESYNC technology for PC gaming. The old model only includes the game mode picture setting, which this newer version also includes. Star rating check. Even for 400β¬ I still think it's worth 5 stars. One of the most important things to note is that this monitor has a TN panel and not an IPS (or PLS) panel. For the most part, everyone agrees that TN panels are better for gaming due to lower input lag and better color accuracy, while IPS panels offer better black levels, contrast, and viewing angles. To my average, unprofessional, and untrained eye, I can sense some of these things. I used to have an LG 34 IPS monitor, a LG Electronics UM65 34UM65 34 inch LED backlit monitor that I bought for $600 almost two years ago. . There's a newer version now, the LG 34UM68-P 34-inch 21:9 Ultra-Wide IPS Monitor with FreeSync for around $450 (sometimes you can find an offer for less than $400). Back then, LG had the best picture quality I've ever seen on a monitor or TV. Images literally seem to pop off the screen, and black levels and contrast are excellent. Overall, I'd say the LG has slightly better picture quality. But what I love about this Samsung monitor is its sizzling brightness - if you set the max brightness to 100 you might go blind - its brightness level is 370 cd/m2. It also has Freesync, which is great for gaming if you have an AMD Freesync graphics card. And finally 4K resolution. You might not think that you can make a difference by setting this high resolution on a monitor with a screen size of only 28 inches and to be honest when I was using an older version of this monitor on a Windows 8 computer, I wasn't impressed either, so how Windows 8 didn't scale as well as Windows 10 so everything looked tiny and very difficult to read. But with Windows 10's scaling options in the display settings, you can easily increase the size of app icons, text, and more, making effective use of 4K resolution. Once you see how crisp and small text and high-resolution elements look compared to 4K and 1080p, you'll never want to go back. I think this is a great investment for the future. With DisplayPort 1.2 and HDMI 2.0 60Hz connections, you are prepared for future upgrades of your PC. This technology should last you for at least 5 years in the future. Now we just have to wait 2-3 years for these 31/32 inch 4K monitors from Samsung and LG to fall into the $500-$600 price bracket. **UPDATE: July 29, 2016 - As I just finished this review, Revain has it back in stock for $400. ****UPDATE: July 29, 2016 - If you want a good IPS alternative, there is this 27" 4K monitor from LG: LG 27UD68-P 27" 4K UHD IPS monitor with FreeSync and white version: LG Electronics 4K UHD 27UD68 -W 27" LED Backlit Monitor ****UPDATE: August 13, 2016 - Having spent more time with this monitor I have to say that the viewing angles are not as good as the 31" IPS LG 4K monitor. Unless you're just a foot away at the magic point, the color shifts are noticeable, particularly the vertical corners that give the screen a red cast. Honestly, with the price cuts for 4K monitors, I'm now more inclined to tell you that this is only a 5-star sub-$400 product.**
