CarPlay, all for less than $200 and it's awesome!

This is the first stereo I've installed since I was young. It cost me $12.95 for a cable adapter for my car (a 2010 Chrysler Sebring convertible) at my local Radio Shack, $6.97 for a mounting kit, and $7.23 for an antenna adapter (both Revain). I bought the device for $169.95 so I was still in for less than $200. Took about an hour to install (just because my dad can solder and read a volt meter). I'm an Apple fan and this was the cheapest way to get CarPlay with the biggest screen. The instructions were good if you can read and learn how to install the radio (for your car) on youtube. Pros: CarPlay works fantastic and after installing my phone's mounting dock (no more cable to connect), I just pop my phone into the dock and away I go. ($19.95 Revain. Okay, that's a little over $200 if you add this gadget along with my requirements). I really, really, really like having a real volume button that I can also press to mute the sound. Cons: Bright at night which can be dangerous. There might be a way to hook it up to my dimmer, but I haven't figured it out (not sure if it's actually possible). Has 3 brightness settings. Light, dimmer than light but still light, then off. You'll need to log into their app to set this up, and it's best to turn it off at night. Your footage will still play, but you'll have to touch the screen (which causes blindness because it's back to being bright by default) to adjust what you're listening to, etc. The headphone jack is also illuminated, as is the USB port. I've found that setting it to red saves my night vision. Fun fact: If you notice the bottom right under the stereo before you get to the climate controls (pic #2) you can see where I installed the mic. I thought about moving all the way around my windshield to the rear view mirror (because the cable is long enough) but this place is secluded and great for everyone in the car. Tip: It's best to solder the wires and I'm sure crimpers would work just fine, but I'm glad dad was there to solder. The voltage measurement was only necessary because of my specific cable stiffness. There is no power supply/accessory (due to my vehicle type) asking for a wire to the fuse box. This was easily overcome by connecting this wire to the bottom cigarette lighter socket from the same auxiliary fuse. Conclusion: I am very satisfied with this system. Now I need a backup camera to install and turn on the parking feature so I can watch a movie while parking with my lady.

Pros
  • Great overall performance
Cons
  • Fairly ok, but...
