They work great through cinder block walls without grout. It does a good clean job. But be aware that you can easily break your wrist with one of these items if you're not careful. For starters, I highly recommend you use a ROUND bit adapter (aka "drill") like the Toolocity AD1112. The round shank means the drill chuck can slip off when you tighten it. Otherwise your wrist will break. If you're using a beveled bit like the ToolCity 0038, this chuck will NEVER slip off (in fact, the force exerted is so great the damn mandrel bends like a pretzel). Then consider buying a concrete mandrel with center drill. This is money well spent as you are far less likely to quit. If you're not using a controlled mandrel, you'll need to make a plywood jig to hold the core (otherwise it will just slip through and you won't be able to start the hole). For example, if you are drilling a 3.5" hole in a cinder block, first cut a round hole in a 10" x 10" square of plywood using a saw bit. Then drill holes for screws in each corner and attach it to the wall. This will prevent the crown from moving. When drilling, drill as slowly as your patience allows so you can cope if the drill bit gets stuck. Whatever you do, always position your wrist so you can release it IF it binds (and believe me, it binds!).
