Works well with adapters - but only for now

I have a triple monitor setup with a 1440p monitor in the middle and two vertical 1080p monitors on the sides (I call it the TIE Fighter). I recently got a remote job where they sent me a laptop + 2 monitors for work, but I decided to take a chance with a KVM switch rather than take up so much desk space. My side monitors are DVI/VGA only, the middle monitor is DP, my graphics card has 2 DP ports, 2 HDMI ports and 1 DVI port, and my laptop dock has 2 DP ports and 1 VGA port. I needed that. A LOT. ADAPTER. I ended up hooking everything up (although a side monitor is actually plugged directly into the DVI/VGA port without using a switch, since HDMI does NOT want to convert to DP: you can't run HDMI -> DP Converter through a switch, so don't even try). Passive DVI->DP adapters worked well with the switch. The DP/VGA adapter I tried didn't work with it at all. I haven't had any issues with the switch as such, except that it doesn't do resolution emulation, which means that when you switch inputs and then switch back, your computer thinks all your monitors have inexplicably switched to 200 x 200. and will resize all your windows in one place accordingly. I deal with this by simply not having the company laptop and my personal PC at the same time, but it would be tedious if I had to readjust the window position/size every time I pressed a key. Note that this thing is smaller than you think, at least if you're used to how gigantic KVM switches were in the early 2000s; It's not as big as a DVR, more like a thick stack of large index cards.

Pros
  • Durable finish
Cons
  • Low repairability
