Bought this and additional sensor separately. The fold-out black plate module is the base station or gateway. It plugs into an Ethernet cable connected to a cable modem or switch. There is also a power adapter that attaches to the wall. The stick that displays H2O is the actual sensor. The wall mount bracket attached to the back can also be attached to the bottom as a table stand. Also shown is a water sensor connected to a sensor labeled "H2O Sensor" which has a 6 foot cable. I placed the H2O sensor in the basement. DO NOT insert batteries into the sensor to activate. You need 2 AAA per sensor, these are not included. You go to Lacrossealerts.com and create an account. When the page opens, click Activate and fill out the form. When complete, it provides step-by-step instructions for activating the gateway and then each of the sensors, including installing the batteries. After 15 minutes the first sensor appeared on my phone. The 2nd sensor took 5 minutes but didn't show any data (I didn't wait 5 minutes for the next data update - my fault) so I deleted it and then couldn't reset it. I spent another 30 minutes trying to connect. I suggest using a tablet or desktop computer to set up the gateway and sensors. It will be much faster than using a cellphone. The range is large. I have a sensor in the basement and a gateway on the 2nd floor and 5 more strips on the sensor. After completion it works great. Wherever you have internet access, you can log in and see the temperature, humidity and if your house is flooded. Some complain about the lack of an app, but I like it. I can log in with my Blackberry, iPAD, work computer, etc. and view the data. I gave it 4 stars for the following reasons: 1.) Setting the alert levels is very easy once you learn how, but it's not included in the online setup or the included instructions. 2.) You can only receive SMS notifications to a phone number and/or an email address. 3.) Resetting the sensor by pressing the button for 12 seconds didn't always work. They are all nits but I think they are worth one star. I tried to answer questions I had before I ordered it. Hope that helps.
