Assembly Tips: Cycling

Designed to be lightweight, with virtually no additional materials and the shortest possible fasteners. All this lends itself to a more complex installation. And a lot fits in a little space. Let me give you some installation tips that are not included in the instructions: 1) Remove the seat from the bike. You have a lot more angles to get an allen wrench than a stand. If you have carbon rails, don't even try. I left the seat on the seat post. 2) It comes with two sets of fittings (short or long with spacer) according to your seat. The instructions tell you to assemble both; Save yourself the hassle and just build one to see if you need longer gear. I have a Fizik Aliante and the shorter gear was sufficient. I also mounted my seat quite far back on the seatpost so I didn't have any interference. Depending on your seat and where you adjusted it, your result may vary and you may need longer hardware with additional spacers. 3) Once you have assembled the bottle cages, place bottles in them before attempting to install them on your seat. There is a slight adjustment and you want to tighten it on the seat knowing you have enough room for bottles. 4) The bottle cage to seat assembly uses the shortest possible hardware. I found some longer screws (I had a spare shank the same size as the faceplate screws; now my spare shank is missing two faceplate screws) these were very valuable to start threading. This is an example of the weight here, just a few extra millimeters makes assembly easier but also adds weight. 5) Figure out how you're going to put the Allen key in there. Don't be afraid to go beyond the script. For example, they come with stickers that face outwards; However, it was easier for me to get the wrench in there if I put the right side to the left and the left side to the right. So I swapped from left to right of the guide. It may have been my seat but take your time and try it on as it is very tight. They are two (2) independent units so you have that flexibility. Since the blocks are independent, take your time to make sure you line them up symmetrically, otherwise it will look very sloppy and sloppy. Again, it's much easier once the seat is down. 6) There's no way in the world you're going to get a torque wrench anywhere near this, so take those torque settings with a grain of salt. Tight, but the fixtures are small, so don't be intimidated either. 7) I assembled without Loctite (I see some people recommend using red Loctite => if you need Loctite use blue). I took it on a 40-mile ride through places where I'd previously lost water bottles and never started a bottle. Nothing worked loose, nothing moved (so apparently my manually calibrated torque readings were sufficient). I appreciated the extra water bottles and I suspect I will appreciate them even more as the weather warms up.
