I think they work well for metal projects, but on wood I constantly struggle with one or two grains on each pad being rougher than the others. This means that while I'm sanding down the right grit, I'm smoothing out the scratches from the previous coarser grit, while a coarse grit or two will bring back the big scratches. I've mostly tried this on hardwood, so I can't say how it would work on metal or softer wood. I ended up buying a set of gold colored pads which are much better.
