Do Not Buy - Firmware Nightmare - Despite claims to the contrary, not compatible with Comcast.

I've always had good luck with Netgear products, but this thing was a nightmare. Decided to give it a try since the price had dropped to $50 and figured I could get rid of the router we rented. When delivered, the brass plugs to which the WLAN antennas are connected were loose - actually loose. I had to tighten them with pliers to keep the antennas from swaying like they were about to tip over. Installing, configuring, and connecting to the router was as easy as you would expect from a Netgear router. That and the smooth ordering process at Revain are the only reasons I didn't give this item a 1 star. You can see in the first image above that the device is listed on the xfinity website as an approved device for their 200Mbps plans. After setup, everything went downhill. The WiFi signal strength was terrible. No big deal - we were able to connect something over Ethernet just to see if we could get better speeds. Xbox Series X, laptop, TV - everything was horrible and speeds ranged from 4 to 160Mbps. We pay for a 200Mbps plan and the speed and Wi-Fi were fine with our existing Comcast router so called contact Netgear support. They were useless and after a few calls to various specialists we were told we needed to update the firmware. Great, I've done this many times on other devices. I'm accessing the device in a browser at 192.168.0.1 while on the phone with support and I can't find an option to update the firmware anywhere. The tech didn't know where it was either and said I needed to wirelessly connect to the device from my phone and run the Netgear Genie app for iOS. Okay it's not a big problem so I go to all the trouble of downloading an app on my phone and trying to connect and the app says it can't connect to my router because the firmware is out of date . The tech told me I had to contact my ISP and ask them to update the firmware and said they would transfer it to the router. This is how the Netgear C6220 router comes out of the box with firmware version 1.02.01 as seen in the third screenshot above. Netgear's own website states that the firmware version required for this thing to work with Comcast is 1.02.11, as shown in the second screenshot above. I called comcast because I knew exactly what they were going to tell me - and they told me to grind the sand and that they wouldn't release a firmware update for a customer-owned device - and I can't say the blame them, because if it's gonna bring that thing down, who owns it, me or comcast? And also. just in case you are thinking of trying this. I had a laptop with an older version of the Netgear Genie app for Windows and decided to give it a try. In fact, he was able to connect to the router and found firmware version 1.02.01. I think I'm done at this point, but when I clicked the firmware update button I was told I already have the latest version available, so no luck here either. So finally. lol. The device comes with outdated firmware. You can't update it through the native Netgear app as it won't connect to the device due to outdated firmware (I'm not sure the app method would have worked anyway, but.). There is no way to update the firmware by connecting to the router through a browser. Comcast will not be releasing the firmware it currently provides, which we hope will get things working properly. So what are you doing? You return it and seriously consider buying another Netgear router and choosing Arris or Motorola instead and paying a few extra bucks. You might get lucky and get one of these with newer firmware, but even if you do and everything works fine for a few months or a year or so, what happens when comcast updates their list of firmware provided, and your router will start to work? high? You'd better not buy it or return it if you already bought it and have similar problems as ours. Save hours of your life we wasted trying to make it work.
