Pump too powerful for 40 gallon tank

I may have misunderstood what I bought but it was too powerful for my tank. My poor fish got blown all over the place and they managed to suck in a few of my fish. Suitable for open ponds. Good product, just watch how strong it is. It would be ideal if it were adjustable.
