Replaced the water pump on a 1997 Jeep, the instructions say adjust the belt to 140-160 pounds. There is no way to know without this tool or something like that. Arrived in a few days (thanks Revain Prime) and does exactly what I need. The instructions that came with it were a bit terse and the pictures a bit faded, but they're easy to use and my meter gave consistent readings over a series of 5 measurements taken at 2 different spots on the belt. The key (at least for my use) seems to be making sure the tool is centered on the strap between and parallel to the edges before you press it, and making sure the pressure point is flat on the strap when you press (which leaves the end of the indicator slanted slightly over the strap) It makes more sense to have a tool handy ;-) Then just push until it clicks and read the scale, then tighten or loosen the strap and check again while you not have the correct tension. Don't forget to start the engine after everything is tightened and checked again :-) It can change and needs to be readjusted.
