We wanted to replace all of our door handles in our house with these and ordered one to test. Instead, we return and continue our search. Our problems with the pen are actually mainly related to our children: the resistance when turning the knob is greater than usual, and the pen itself is larger than usual. Overall, none of our girls (ages 5 and 7) can open a door with one hand as easily as our current handles do. And I grudgingly admit that even I've found that increased effort is required, even if I were willing to put up with it. I agree with another reviewer who described problems opening the door from the other side (either with the tool provided or a screwdriver). I'm great with lots of gears, but this one is pretty finicky - it's really difficult to find a release slot that's sunken deep into the grip, on its own little "island", and then find a little slot that goes in he fits and turns it in the right direction to unlock. Even with young children who can accidentally (or intentionally in a moment of uncontrollable emotion) lock the door, not being able to open the door easily is a big problem. Luckily, my kids overcame (or seem to be able to) these challenges! In short, it would be difficult for me to open this door in less than a minute. With all of this, I understand that these are rather sensitive issues. The lock feels very well made and looks beautiful. I was still considering keeping it even.
