Review on ๐Ÿ’จ Enhanced Magnetic Dryer Vent Coupling - MagVent MV-180 by Jose Pacyga

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Great concept, minimal design execution

While accessing the dryer vent in my laundry room isn't particularly difficult, MagVent looked like an elegant way to add a 4-foot flexible dryer vent, which had nasty "hairpins" and limited vacuuming behind the washer and dryer. The design concept of the MagVent 180 is great; However, his performance could have been much better. Good qualities: 1. The materials are generally of good quality, the magnets are strong.2. Packaging and instructions are well done. Not very good: 1. The mounting ring that attaches to the wall has hex head screws. They protrude so far that the magnetic ring is not flush with the mounting bracket along the entire circumference of the connection. You can see (in the photos) that the top of the magnet ring is about 3/16" from the wall mount (the picture on the side shows the screw head causing the breakage). In my opinion, the screws should have a flat head and the beveled holes of the mount or ring that contains the magnet mount should be countersunk. If my dryer were gas powered I would find this lack of a secure fit totally unacceptable, but luckily my dryer is electric. I should add that there is a nozzle that extends 1-2 inches past the mounting bracket so I don't have airflow noticed through the gap. Despite the product description and Q&A, I would recommend that the alignment - both vertical and horizontal - between the dryer vent and the wall mount inlet should not exceed 1-1/2 inches. I was able to adjust the position of my dryer so that it is in line with the outlet in the wall, for example, but still about 2-3/4 inches lower. The MagVent 180 could barely level itself without overloading either the magnetic mount or the flexible material (more on the fragility of that below).3. As other reviewers point out, the flexible foil material is very fragile. When I checked the connection, the hose clamp that attaches the flexible hose to the dryer outlet was not as tight as it should be. This caused the hose clamp and flexible line to slip off the dryer, tearing the material. Luckily, I had some metal foil HVAC tape lying around and was able to both patch the hole and reinforce the material where the zip tie clamps the MagVent flex line. Then I pinched the collar of the hole so that it almost deformed the dryer's exhaust pipe. I would recommend anyone installing a MagVent to wrap a few turns of duct tape or ideally HVAC tape before installing the yoke. Then tighten the clamp more than you think necessary, especially if there is an installation angle. Conclusion: 1. This may be a good solution for you, but only if the dryer outlet and the outlet in the wall are almost perfectly aligned, increase the strength of the thin foil vent duct and replace the wall mounting screws with pan head screws instead. Hex head screws.2. I should also add that I haven't had the opportunity to remove the dryer to test its reliability and the supposed main benefit of the product. I assume this shouldn't be a problem with the improvements I've made. I'm concerned that the limited alignment flexibility might be an issue if I need to replace the dryer in the future, especially since I've virtually eliminated the possibility of going back to a traditional dryer vent line by cutting and bending back the part that was previously protruding through the wall. .

Pros
  • High marks for support and durability from testers
Cons
  • Not as thick as other options
