This machine does what it's supposed to do. It removes moisture from the air and deposits it in the device's bucket. This happens quite quietly and quickly. The reason why this device doesn't get 5 stars is because of quality control at GE. I said the third time was a charm. When I started the device for the first time, it didn't switch off automatically and the bucket spilled onto the basement floor. Now the shutdown mechanism is simple and fairly reliable. So what happened? When the bucket is installed in the device, the roller presses the switch that allows the dehumidifier to operate. As the water level rises, the float on the locking mechanism rises, causing the reel to eventually disengage from the switch, disabling the device. So what went wrong? Inspection of the locking device showed that the styrofoam on the float had extended too far and was touching the side wall of the bucket, preventing it from floating freely on the surface of the rising water. This means that the switch will not work due to the reel and the dehumidifier will continue to fill the bucket to capacity. Aha! I inserted the foam so that there was a gap with the bucket. This should definitely fix the problem. Not as much. The dehumidifier wouldn't turn off and the water started running all over my basement again. It's time to take another look at the device. I checked the float and it still had a gap with the bucket. I ran my hand over the indentation of the bucket and felt something protrude from the top of the indentation. It was a filter. When assembling the dryer, the filter was not fully seated in the seat. When inserting the bucket, the filter was bent, which bounced off the top of the locking mechanism, preventing the swimmer from ascending. Test number three successfully passed! After about 5 hours the dehumidifier shut off, the "EMPTY" light was flashing and there was no water on the floor. Now the dehumidifier is working again and I have full confidence that it will do its job as it should. I wish you success. Continued: Several days have passed and the dehumidifier is still working properly. A clarification. The styrofoam situation I mentioned earlier will not affect the function of the locking mechanism in any way. By the time the styrofoam comes into contact with the bucket, the shutdown has occurred.
