Artist Review - What you REALLY need to know. UPDATED.

What you need to know: I LOVE how these pens work. They layer and blend absolutely beautifully. They sharpen smoothly, hold an edge well and are comfortable to use. There is no plaque and you can continue layering past the point where the tooth of the paper is filled. (Please note that while I enjoy painting in other artists' work as a hobby, I am writing this review from the perspective of a professional artist.) Remember: These are NOT soft pens. They are built to be layered. So if you're looking for pens to use to intimidate, this isn't the one for you. They need something THIN to get the most out of them. If you try to get them to use the same technique you use with soft pencils, you'll get frustrated and your hand will get tired. Instead, make continuous layers of light. At the same time - it is definitely worth correcting your technique. If you are unsure whether these pens are for you, I recommend purchasing a loose set or a smaller set first. The only problem I have with it is this: I keep reaching for colors that don't exist, like pastels or others. natural tones. These are almost all exceptionally fully saturated traditional pigment colors. Do you want grey-green? VERY Pity! Light green, almost non-fluorescent? FORGET IT! And that's one of the reasons I sent them back. I was so upset with the color choices that I decided they weren't worth it - AT THIS TIME. The one absolutely must-have shade is this set – 371 Blueish Pale, a shade of white that's incredibly handy for all types of blends and highlights. The main reason I returned them is that almost a third of my set had undissolved pigment in the cores, hence: spiky, striped bits. I've spoken to several other artists and they assure me this is NOT NORMAL. (Caran d'Ache maintains extremely high standards of quality.) If you buy these pencils and the leads are scratched, return them for replacement because THIS IS NOT WHAT YOU PAID FOR. I still intend to repurchase these pens at a lower price. late date Since sending them back I have actually MISSED them and regret not getting them back. I have the best artists' pencils on the market - Polychromos, Holbeins, Derwent, Prismacolor, Spectrum Noir, Irojiten - as well as many student pencils and still want them because they don't look like ANY of the pencils. Miscellaneous. If they had more muted colors they would definitely rate FIVE STARS, which is a rating I don't give lightly. The product has to exceed all expectations to get the highest rating from me. My sample image for this review is from Nicholas F. Chandravienata's Serené and I used a Caran d'Ache Full Bright mixer and shades of white acrylic paint. for accents. UPDATE: It's July and I've missed these pens so much I had to reorder and they are IMPRESSIVE. No scratchy bits in the cores. Silky smooth and highly pigmented and just DREAMY! I still think they need an expanded color palette (fingers crossed for a special 30-piece anniversary set like the one Caran d'Ache released for their Supracolor line of pencils this year! Pastels please!), but I had epiphany and I did Also I bought a Luminance which I hope will bring me more colors as it is advertised as working well with Pablos. And my wallet hurts now. If my debit card doesn't catch fire, it's a miracle. The only kit I prefer to these is Holbein Artist 150. Pablos doesn't glow like Polychromos and the colors are more original. Definitely worth the money.

Pros
  • Great for blending in mixed media
Cons
  • Expensive
