For the past year or two my cat Smegal has been peeing on the floor occasionally. I always knew that if the tray was abused it was recommended that a urine test be taken, but I always thought it was something else - a change in litter species, one of our cats taunting Smegal, etc. Well, last month finally me took a urine sample to the vet and in fact the pH was too high and there were crystals in the urine. They definitely recommended prescription diet foods; However, I bought all three canned flavors and he hated them all. He didn't eat any of them unless he tasted them on the first day. Since I was feeding my cats one raw food per day (from Woody's Pet Food Deli in Minneapolis), I chose not to give him anything but raw food because I had read that it could cure/prevent this problem, but he still urinated on it floor every now and then. I was going to buy Metigel but decided to try this one first. I've been giving him the recommended amount twice a day for the past 3 weeks. He hasn't peed on the floor since taking the supplement. Best of all the vet called today with a text message of his urine from last night and his pH is back to what it should be and no crystals! Great thing! updated 12/20/14. The container recommends reducing the amount after a while. I found it strange but thought they should know what they are talking about. So I started giving him the powder once a day instead of twice a day. After a while, on vacation, he naturally started licking his stomach and growling so they took him to the vet's emergency room and his pH got really high again and they thought he had a bladder infection. So I went back and gave him 1/4 teaspoon twice a day (he's a 20 lb cat). So be careful with the dose reduction. Also, I was very disappointed when I had to reorder this that the price went from $17 to $25! Needless to say, I bought it elsewhere for $19.
