This insert fits into a matching D-shaped hole on the back of the handle and then mounts onto the stereo or steerer shaft. The factory equipment is of good quality. Over time, the plastic handle will break and no longer hold the insert, causing it to fall off (and little fingers are often lost). The metal inserts in this set of replacement grips are mild steel rather than spring steel. They are poorly made and lack a clear D-shape with sharp corners. For this reason, the handles are mounted without any effort, but fall back immediately. If you can find and reuse the factory spring steel inserts (often still on the shaft) you're much better off. In my case I had one, but the other was MIA. I was able to remove the mild steel insert from the back of the interchangeable grips, which was very difficult, reshape them with various needle nose pliers, and finally install them. Tip: After reshaping the insert so it stays in place on the shaft, install it only halfway into the back of the grip, then install it onto the shaft and slide it all the way in. One reviewer mentioned using epoxy. Keep the handles in place. To each their own, but please do not glue the handles back on. He asks for trouble. This was another "cheap" solution that should have taken seconds but turned into 15+ minutes of frustration and problem solving.
