Review on ๐ŸฆŽ Premium Zilla Reptile Terrarium Bedding: Coconut Husk Brick Substrate by Marcus Hargrave

Happy Crabbies

This coconut shell rock is literally the size of a brick! I read the reviews before purchasing this item for three of my hermit crabs and realized this would be a good option for them. I noticed that some reviews mentioned that this expands the space so some only used part of the brick as they didn't fill their entire terrarium with it. I decided to follow this advice and information and only use a fifth of the brick. The material is quite compact, so I had to cut this thick brick with a serrated knife to separate any pieces from it. A brick takes 1 gallon of water to soak, so I used about 3 cups for the part I cut off/broke off. At first I thought I had too much water for the amount of husk I was soaking, but after about ten minutes, as stated on the package, the coconut husk had absorbed all the water and expanded A LOT! I figured that might be too much even for my 10 gallon tank, but I was able to use anything on one side (about a fifth of the tank) as bedding in addition to whatever sand they have. My hermit crabs went straight to the coconut shell and were active for the rest of the day! The shell retains moisture very well without getting wet. My hermit crabs love it and it makes me a happy hermit crab parent! The peel isn't in big chunks, and that's not a good thing either. It's all about the right consistency and texture for my crab. It also doesn't stick to their legs and carapace when they're wet like wet sand does to them.
