Review on πŸ”¬ QX5 Digital Microscope by Digital Blue by Dan Toliver

Difficult installation

I bought it for my daughter as an educational toy. The design is cheap and of very poor quality. It also doesn't have its own power supply and is USB powered. The software is primitive and constantly sets my display to the lowest possible resolution. UPDATE: All the PCs I had problems with were AMD based. I recently received an Intel computer with XP. The Scope installed with no problems and works well. Difficulties could be related to AMD incompatibility. Interestingly, the Win98 box was also Intel. While this doesn't excuse the problem, it does indicate that you're probably fine with an Intel computer. If you have AMD, you could be in trouble. Installation was a nightmare as I detailed below. Installation: First I tried to install it on a new XP machine. No luck as the microscope was never connected to the network. Then I drained it with Win2K, which didn't get any better. Then I tried their "Troubleshooting" guide. Basically it tells you to continue reinstalling and rebooting until it works. No luck there either. I noticed that it seems to be designed for older machines. So I tried it with an old Win98 machine. It ran better and I could actually control the scope light from the computer. But still no picture. I then restarted the machine once more, then disconnected and reconnected the oscilloscope. That helped. I could actually look at the photos. However, creating a movie causes the software to crash. I understand that others have been able to install it on Win2K and XP, but that may be due to configuration differences. A good product will install regardless of configuration issues. Utilization: The images are good or mediocre, but for the price, they're great. It is also good that it has two light bulbs. Allows you to view things like coins that are not transparent. The microscope is detachable so you can aim and play with it. In general, the software and problems with XP and Win2K make it unacceptable for me. If I didn't happen to have a Win98 machine I would return it. In the form as it is, I connected it to the box with Win98 and it is definitely suitable for toys. My advice is to keep your expectations low and buy it locally. Then if it causes you problems, just send it back.
