Great charger under Tools & Equipment

After reading the reviews and trying a few other chargers I decided to give this one a try. I wanted something smart, capable of drawing low amps for swimming and maintenance, and capable of delivering several amps for faster charging than other smart chargers. To test this, I turned on the headlights on my '77 MGB and drained the battery to zero. I hooked up the CTEK MXS 5.0 and it ran diagnostics fairly quickly and stopped at step 3, ie bulk loading. After an hour I checked the charger and found that it was very warm. I put a piece of wood; it was on my tourneau vinyl cover. I checked it again and found that it is still very warm. Using a laser infrared temperature sensor, I measured the temperature of the top of the charger at 103-107 degrees. It was below 128 degrees Fahrenheit! I moved the charger so that the bottom was open for ventilation (more than half of the wood block removed). An hour later the top was 98 degrees and the bottom was about 107. Much better. Finally, I went to bed and woke up with a fully charged battery. The battery with a capacity of 50 Ah was charged for about 11-12 hours. My Ancel battery tester indicated the battery was 100% charged and 98% functional at 13.09 volts. It would have taken my Battery Tender Jr three days to do this. Apart from temporary problems I am very satisfied. I recommend mounting the charger on something that will help aerate the floor, such as a B. a cooling rack for cooking (or tape some feet to the bottom of the charger) as is the case with a laptop.

Pros
  • Great for me
Cons
  • Some difficulties
