Thick metal. I believe this item will last for years. The product is also much heavier than I expected. There are times when 2 toothpicks will try to come out at the same time, preventing both from coming out. However, this can be resolved by turning the container back and then trying again. The only real downside I see with the product is the inability to see how many toothpicks are left in the container. But I would trust this product to stand up to glass and plastic every day. You can definitely tell how much is left by shaking the container, but if you want a visual cue you might have to look elsewhere. However, for those who are interested in something that is better for the environment than plastic and more durable than glass, I would definitely choose this item. The metal is quite thick and heavy. It is also food grade stainless steel. Very gift. I would certainly trust this article one last time.
