Direct 12V car charger does not step down to the 10V output required by the charging station (which further downshifts to 8V for the battery). Since most 12v charging systems tend to run at 13-14v, a direct 12v charger will disable circuit protection in the charging station (or, judging by some other reviews, may overheat it). I bought this USB charger as an alternative to the direct 12v car charger cable that came with my radio (which didn't work). Paired with a USB car charger (or a USB wall charger) this thing works like a charm. It might take a little longer than a regular wall charger, but I can charge it at home or in the car (or really from any USB source). As a bonus, this USB charger also came with a charging station so I can now charge both batteries at the same time at home if needed. (This unit comes with a USB wall charger and the standard wall charger and base that comes with the radio. Also note about the charger: Red: Charging. Red/Green flickers. Almost charged. Green: Charged. Please note , that unlike most chargers that only switch from one state to another, they flicker for about an hour when the battery is "almost full".
