All my knives can now cut paper. Once I get the hang of sharpening in general, I'm pretty sure they'll shave my beard too. As with anything, there is a learning curve. I suggest that those who are new to sharpening watch any relevant videos on YouTube as well as videos about sharpening in general. What matters is how you pull the blade through the machine. Practice gently twisting the edge into the belt as you pull. Never use rough tape unless your blade is visibly damaged. It's just not necessary. Once you can cut the paper relatively smoothly, try smoothing the edge with a worn, thin piece of tape coated with your choice of grinding and deburring paste. I use Herb's Yellowstone Honing and Stropping Compound. Practice creates masters. I'm deducting a star because of the price. It reminds me of the overpriced printer cartridges. Once the print shop catches you on the hook, they will charge you for replacement ink cartridges. However, once you get the hang of it, I'm pretty sure $20 belts will last over a year for the average end user.
