DO NOT LOCK CABINET

When I received the cabinet I checked the lock then installed the cabinet and then checked the lock again. Worked great. I put the keys in the closet, locked it and opened it. a few times and then added some car keys to the wall side of the closet and locked it. When I tried to open it the next day, the key only turned about 1/3 of the way and it was impossible. Unlock. I tried to force it down and the key broke off in the lock (as expected - I used quite a bit of force). I then used a very thin punch to knock the hinge out and I still had to bend part of the lock's latch. Latch the door to fully open the door by bending the side with the latch of the wall part of the cabinet. Pulled everything back and removed the locking part of the lock so I could keep using the *unlocked* cabinet for now. . Diagnosing the problem: The car key causes the internal free-spinning key plate to slide outward slightly, preventing the latch bolt from fully rotating. The metal has dents from squeezing the key with pliers. Apparently the resistance was due to the latch abutting the inner metal plate. If you can make sure the inner panel doesn't swing back to lock the latch (without inserting important keys and/or making sure the inner panel swings naturally toward the wall and not the door), you could probably risk locking the cabinet No, I wouldn't lock it up. Or make sure you have a punch that works to knock out the hinge pin and that it's set so you can get to the pivot pin with a punch and a hammer.
