I've recently resumed my old gamemaster life, this time to spend time with my kids. In the days when we played everywhere we could and on budget, we didn't factor in much, although we had a few miniatures that we almost never used to simulate combat. As such, I can attest to the difference in quality of combat sim with and without mesh mats - essentially all of the fancy combat maneuvers (including flanking, attacking, etc.) that have been added to the rules over the past two and a half decades now essentially require the use of some support , if you play D&D 3e, 3.5e, Pathfinder or 4e. So I got a regular chessex mat, and to make room for it, I got this huge one as well. After using it several times, here is my assessment: * I followed the advice of other reviews and got the Expo vis-à-vis. use red) a and everything is fine. *They roll up well and were sent neatly packaged - contrary to what I've read in other reviews, the giant mat came rolled up rather than folded, making it very easy to use from the start. *To wipe them down I usually use a damp paper towel first, then a dry one (two per large mat) *I rarely use a very large mat, although it's nice to know I can if the need arises.
