Review on 🎧 Sony WMFS111 Portable Cassette Player: Compact and Convenient Audio Playback by Jathan Louis

Revainrating 3 out of 5

good enough for sports

This is a good mid-range Walkman. The anti-jog function makes this device good for listening to music while running. The buttons are conveniently arranged for one-handed operation. You get very good sound, but as with all portable cassette players, you are at risk of tape alignment issues. In general, the more expensive the turntable, the more attention is paid to the correct position of the cassette and playback head. At $50 you can expect some issues in this area and you'll find them in the WM-FS111. I've found that randomly toggling the PLAY button back and forth increases and decreases the highs on playback. The change is significant and enough to make a brand new cassette sound terrible. It's obvious that something is moving inside the device, and it's most likely the playhead. The standard Megabass feature comes in handy when you work outdoors, as bass is the first thing you need in this environment. The device has a volume limiter that doesn't seem well thought out. Basically, with the limiter on, you have to turn the volume all the way up to achieve a comfortable listening level. If you then turn off the audio limiting feature, the device will attack your ears with a loud roar that can damage your hearing. You'd better be careful and monitor the volume yourself instead of relying on this feature.
