Works just as well with a .5 gallon can BUT I've noticed that it only goes through 2 of my 6 .5 gallon cans by the neck. I didn't want to stuff it in the jar for fear that the bottom metal ring might come loose if I tried to remove the filter and stay in the jar. Another question I asked myself before ordering was whether a wooden lid is really needed. It is not. Usually wide caps and clamps fit perfectly on the filter rim. As for the recipe, I use enough coffee beans to fill a Bodum grinder nearly twice and top up with freshly filtered water for a double strength cold drink. I've also found that adding a scoop of cocoa and/or cinnamon makes for great flavor. I have a small amount of ground coffee that still squeaks through the filter, but it's a very fine sieve and no sieve filter is 100% perfect. For a metal strainer, it does the job perfectly. If you are worried about a small but fine sediment of coffee grounds. Get over it and use a paper filter during or after brewing. It seems to be the only way. 4 stars because it does its job well, but the dimensions are a millimeter or two larger to ensure everyone can fit the filter in any wide-mouth jar.
