We called local locksmiths to find out who could actually program and cut the key for our 17 year old Forester. Only two in our area had a "chip programmer" to do it. The locksmith wanted $90 for the key fob and $50 for the programming. The dealer was more expensive. The locksmith was reluctant to make a key and made us pay $50 up front for the program. If the key didn't work, we were out of luck and $50. He used the PIN that came with the package and seemed genuinely surprised that it worked. We risked it and were satisfied. We saved about $50 compared to the locksmith price and over $100 compared to the dealer.
