Update: Caution: Duracell with Duralocks tend to leak after charging. I have old Duracells without Duralock and haven't had any leaks yet. We have battery operated Mr Beams sensor lights placed in the courtyard and gardens. They each require three D-size batteries. While the batteries last a long time, they get expensive — even at Costco prices — when it comes time to replace them. When I first had to turn them on, I realized that the number of dead batteries over time would be astronomical. I'm a 60's product and remember the alkaline "chargers" of the 70's and 80's. Judging by the quality of the batteries and the lack of technology, they were not only inefficient but downright dangerous. Many of them exploded and licked like crazy. We switched to rechargeable batteries and had several winners and losers. They were cheap enough for an AA or AAA size, but D? Wow. And as I read the reviews, I saw that they don't always serve or work as they should, so I started thinking about charging alkaline batteries again. I was very skeptical and spent hours/days researching. Cheap alkaline chargers are almost guaranteed to disappoint you, but there are expensive ones that don't work any better. I asked a few forums and they directed me to the FC999. I came here to buy it, but then I saw this one. I asked the manufacturer if it was newer and what the difference was between the two and got a quick reply! Yes, it's newer and can charge some lithium batteries that the FC999 doesn't have. So I press bite. When I got my charger (from MaximalPower - earlier than expected) I went out and replaced the old batteries (Duracells) with new ones, brought them in and installed my charging station. I tested the first set and found that 1 was still pretty good (but could be sanded) and the other 2 were well exhausted. After warming them to room temperature, I put them in. Half an hour later the first one was ready. After thinking, quite sarcastically, "Oh, of course it's done," I took it out and tested it. What do you know. That's good. I can't tell any difference with a tester. I'm not an electronics expert, just a battery user who wants my alkaline batteries to last longer, so I rely on my portable battery tester, which can be found at any hardware store. However, I am very impressed. Bye. I am a picky shopper so you can bet I will come back to update if there are any issues but for now I love this item! FINALLY someone got these things right!
