Better aftermarket filter than factory

UPDATE Nov 2013: Make sure the supplier has and is shipping the HP series version and not the lower PS series. K&N PRODUCTION THE HP-7013 so get it while you can. :-(------ K&N is well known for making heavy duty oil filters but I didn't think there was much they could do to improve the pleated paper insert that fits into the permanent metal oil filter housing on my 4 cylinder Mazda 6. However, the first improvement I noticed was the end caps that hold the pleats in place. The Mazda factory filter and all the aftermarket filters I've tried have rubber washers that are glued to the edges of the pleats K&N took the plastic and dip both ends of the pleats by putting paper in both end caps. The plastic is flexible and contains a ball for a good seal. All other filters use a screen disc around a center hole on both ends. I have no way of doing a micrometer analysis to determine this how much or how much dirt is getting through the filter, but I will be able to determine at the next oil change whether this filter has cracks and collapsed into folds of paper like I've seen with other brands. contains both O-rings, like all other suppliers and their filters. I don't see a huge difference in the quality of these components. Will update in about 2000 miles. Using Mobil 1 5W-20 synthetic oil, combination of high speed and city driving.
