The temperature can't be trusted. Although the cost of this device is low, the price will be much higher depending on the amount of meat you are burning and the importance of the event you are cooking for if it fails. I liked the idea of having a device that would allow me to remotely check the temperature of the Thanksgiving smoked turkey. This would allow me to spend more time with my family and less time hovering over the grill. or so I thought. According to the recipe, the bird should cook for about 7-8 hours. At the 6 o'clock mark I found that the bird was only reading 135° which was much lower than expected considering how little time was left and for a while it was reading 135°. I went out and stuck the probe into different parts of the turkey. The readings ranged from 118° to 140°. The measured values were the same for the transmitter and receiver. The probe was intact and the wire was not damaged. I put the probe back into the bird, closed the grate and watched it cook. The temperature stayed at 135° for about an hour and then started to drop. At that point I gave up the ThermoPro and checked the temperature with my Javelin thermometer. This time the turkey breast was 165° and the thighs 180°. The bird was ready at 7 o'clock. If I continued to rely on the ThermoPro, I would end up with an over-dried, overcooked (if not burned) turkey. In the meantime I have tested the ThermoPro on my Javelin with tap water. My water heater is set to around 127°. The Javelin showed 130° when placed under running water. I checked several times and the readings fluctuated between 130-132°. Then I used the ThermoPro and it stopped at 114°. I tried again and indeed it started to sink and stopped at 73° on the second try. Out of curiosity, I also tested my TruTemp analog meat thermometer, which read my water as 132° (it took a long time to get a reading compared to digital thermometers). When purchasing I read some of the negative reviews and thought maybe they just received a faulty unit. If it doesn't work I'll return it and lose $35 worst case scenario (compared to Flame Boss which is around $329). I could use 10 ThermoPros at this price and still be a step ahead. NOT RIGHT. You have to factor in the cost of the meat you lose cooking that your ThermoPro can't read properly and the loss incurred due to the event you are cooking for (large celebrations, gatherings, parties, etc.). Thanksgiving almost never passed for me this year. I agree with some of the other reviews that say it's made out of cheap plastic and probably won't survive a 3 foot fall. However, THAT is exactly what I would expect in the "You get what you pay for" category. But no matter how cheap the price, the product must perform the primary function for which it is advertised.
