Review on πŸ”§ Powerbuilt 640811 Back Tap Thread Repair: Restoring Threads with Ease by Jason Man

Good as a last resort in tools and gear

This is a good tool for the money. If your spark plug threads are rotten, you basically have three options: get a new head (rarely needed), drill and tap a head for a coil (probably the best option), or drill through the threads. If you can make sure you can use this tool to clean the piston and remove any deposits before installing the spark plug, it's a good, relatively quick, and inexpensive first option. If you only have half (or less) of the thread left, you can at least use this to attach a drive connector to the mechanic to properly seat the wound coil, saving you $100 in towing costs. The only "disadvantage" When using the tool, I noticed that after greasing, the central rod that retracts the conical piston wanted to rotate, making it impossible to fine-tune the depth of the thread. The only way to tighten it was to pull the knurled nut all the way back, tighten it as best you could, and cut the threads in one go. I was lucky and everything worked out. I'd love to see something like a slot in the spiral pen shaft to keep it from spinning, but considering it did the job I can't complain too much. The only other issue I had was the length of the tool and that was only a minor issue for my situation. Due to the position of the spark plug hole, it was difficult to tighten the nut with the tool fully inserted. Another 2-3 inches would really help (albeit on many levels). I was finally able to fiddle with long handled pliers to install it (also true). If I were working with a spark plug next to a firewall I don't think this tool would last long enough.

Pros
  • Great for me
Cons
  • Negative impression
