If you're wondering why this box is so cheap, it's because the firmware (software) it runs on is very buggy. It's still a good deal if you don't mind enduring the troubles it causes. First the pros (besides the low price.) It has a good sensitive tuner, slightly better than my TV. The image quality is very good and you can choose from a variety of output resolutions. I love how it shows a mini-program for each channel when I switch channels. It has its own volume control that can be used in place of the TV volume. Press the INFO button twice and you will get a full description of the show. as well as an indicator of signal strength and image quality. You can use the TIMESHIFT button at any time to pause a live program and resume playback. Recording the show to a USB stick also works (but more on that below). It is very small, light and compact. The device also works as a very good portable USB media player and I would buy it just for that feature. Now for a few cons. Like many others here, I couldn't set the device to my local time - it kept going back to the Pacific time zone. So I'm just dealing with a three hour offset from Eastern time in my head. Off-the-air recording to a USB stick works well, with very good image quality (but use a newer USB stick with a decent write speed to avoid stuttering. ) However, there will be problems if you want to use the schedule recording function (the software calls this "book" recording). I don't even mention this feature. This seems to work fine when I'm scheduling a single TV show entry (when I think of compensating for the time difference between Eastern and Pacific time). However, when I ask the device to record shows every night or every week, it doesn't work. For this to work, you must periodically edit posted listings to correct listing dates. After each scheduled recording, the date of the next one is incorrectly calculated. Also be careful when you schedule a recording - the default is View instead of Record. Be sure to change this setting every time. The device can overheat because the ventilation openings are at the bottom. Fix this by propping the device up with something small to expose the vents underneath. Also, don't put it on anything hot. It will also likely work well if you leave the device on its side. A somewhat weak remote control has a short range and must be aimed precisely. A simple fix to this problem is to use a generic remote instead - use a good performing remote and it should probably be a learnable remote to remember all the important buttons. The program summaries accessed via the EPG or the INFO button can sometimes be confusing - parts of other program descriptions are often confused with the one currently displayed. Don't keep that in mind when you wonder why Captain Kirk appears in your I Love Lucy episode. And I'm sure there are other bugs I haven't seen yet. But I still like it, bugs and all.
