Metallic paint arrived cleaned

I have a serving board that I love but it's always nice to have multiple serving options. The one I like was given to me. It's made of mango wood with iron carrying handles and retails for $58, but you can customize the writing on the top. My sister gave it to me and she bought it from the thirty-first. Made in India. The Pfaltzgraff board is made from acacia wood, has a leather strap for wall storage, and retails at $29.99. The board is good, the letters are metal but the transparent coating on the letters is peeling off. I'm not sure I want direct food contact. Sounds like a quality control issue, but at least I can use the other side without the labels. We also have another boot cutting/serving board. It was from Ikea and cost less than $20 for the same size, made from acacia wood. Looks very good. In general, I struggle with the fact that a clear cost factor flakes off in letters. Why do you need a transparent layer? What are the letters actually made of?
