10 oz LAMXD Yarn Winder and Swift Yarn Umbrella is a durable set that can be used to wind both larger and smaller balls of yarn. The winder has several heavy duty gears and the spindle is large enough to make large balls of yarn with a center pull. The ball winder features a rotating flyer and a large wire guide that can be removed for easy storage. It screws onto a plate that you screw onto the table to hold the winder in place while you use it. You'll need to attach the winder and scissors to a table that has a few inches of overhang - just big enough to move the clamp portion of the roller and scissors and let them sit flat and secure when you tighten the clamps. The clamps are quite deep so they can be used on a thick table if needed. Ball wrapping guides exist, but they're very easy and useful if you already know what you're doing. There is no guide at all to setting up Swift. Swift is a simple style but is a good size and moves freely. You'll need to mount it a few inches from the ball wrapper so they don't hit each other as they spin. You press it against the table and then make sure the wing nut and bolt holding the center axle of the reel are tight enough to hold it in place. The negative points are that there is nothing under the bar to support it. To lift the Swift, you need to hold the white clip on the pole and lift it up like an umbrella. Loosen the clamp and it stays in place. When I put a skein of yarn on a pair of scissors, I don't lift it all at first, just most of it. If you then wrap the yarn around the outside of the scissors between the blue spacers, you will have some room to adjust the yarn without over-tightening. As you get the yarn in place, move the swift all the way up to hold it more securely. It sounds pretty complicated, but it really isn't, and it's very easy once you've done it once or twice. A tip from experience: Don't twist and swing the spool so fast that the swift moves faster than the spool and your yarn then twists twice on the scissors. [Do not ask. It was ugly.] The ball wrapper is designed to hold up even under heavy use. I wish there was better Swift bar support, but other than that it's well built for this style of Swift. The set included a pair of scissors as a gift, which was a pleasant surprise. Everything fits back into the box for storage. This is a good yarn winding kit.
