I live in an apartment building and lately our water has often turned red-brown and leaves residue. I was worried about safety as I felt the contaminated water would irritate my skin. Since the caretaker doesn't seem to want to do anything, I ordered this kit to get an idea. Most tests take no more than 10 minutes and are very easy to do. Although the bacteria test takes 48 hours. The results were "convincing" and I noticed that the iron and copper levels were elevated, which was about what I expected given the color of the water. If in doubt as to whether your water is safe to drink I would always have it professionally tested but I think it was a good first step.
