I live in an apartment building and lately our water has often turned red-brown and leaves residue. I was worried about safety as I felt the contaminated water would irritate my skin. Since the caretaker doesn't seem to want to do anything, I ordered this kit to get an idea. Most tests take no more than 10 minutes and are very easy to do. Although the bacteria test takes 48 hours. I sampled my shower water in a small bowl. You don't need much. The results were "convincing" and I noticed that the iron and copper levels were elevated, which was about what I expected given the color of the water. If in doubt as to whether your water is safe to drink I would always have it professionally tested but I think it was a good first step.
