First you hardly have to soak it for about 5 minutes. I gave it 8-10 since it was the first time but after that it was 3-5 minutes each time. Second, it is an amazing stone. It polishes the edge and even polishes it to a mirror finish if you take the time to leave a mush. A bit soft, you can cut it on the edge, but it feels good and does the job well. UPDATE: You don't need to soak for more than a minute or two. Basically spray and go, prolonged soaking will degrade the quality of the stone! really great stone. A little soft in feedback but mostly just smooth, if there's a hiccup the stone doesn't scare you, it just sort of lets you know. Like Dude, you know, the rock lies in a person. Very forgiving and easy to work with, capable of terrible sharpness. I tried 55HRC, 57-59HRC and 1 VG-10 61-62HRC. It polished them all. As you can see I also had a King 1200 with this stone and I used this stone first, then these 6000, for each knife. If you're looking at the 800-1200 grit range, I recommend 1200. If you don't have a lot of chips to fix (I've tried, a 0.5mm chip took 15 minutes), even if you do, is it slowly. But if you only have dull knives, especially something like Calphalons, Wüsthofs or any other AUS-6 or X50CrMoV15 steel, holds around 59 HRC at best, these stones work like a great team. I've just peeled off newspaper each time to compare the edges to rocks, but a full line with some sort of connection along with a Nexus BD-1N knife is next on my list. If you just need a polishing stone and you have a gap between 10,000 and say 3000 below that, that 6000 is the bees' knees. really a great stone for any collection. It gives good feedback, wears out slowly, polishes the blade very well and is suitable for knives with the most common hardnesses. My blade cuts through the paper while I can barely hold it. He cuts plastic sheeting simply by placing a knife on it. I will be taking the KING 300 to complete the set and make sure I have something for my most common concerns and desires. A lanyard with compound on the suede side and possibly 0.05 micron diamond emulsion on the smooth side and side. I have other issues like finding Naniwa Aotoshi cheap on Revain, but I digress. If you're looking for the best combo you can get, get the KDS 1K/6K Combo Stone. If you want the next best thing but better durability and more room to work, get this 6000 and 1200 brick IMHO. I haven't tried 300 yet, but if it's as good as the others, I'll be using kings for a long time and adding other stones to it. They are so good for what it is cheap. I'm a believer in water stones.
