Good gear but difficult to manage with offshore support

. I bought this for our kindergarten which is in the same building as our church. It's a large metal building with metal spikes and I was looking for a device with multiple external antennas. A multiple antenna is designed to help with reflections that occur when radio waves bounce off building walls and metal frames and arrive at the device out of phase. An external antenna should also increase the range, and since it was a large building, I got by with just one device. The package arrived in good condition and earlier than expected (must love this Revain Prime). When I opened the package, I found the first problem, a mini-disk with instructions and an auto-configuration program. But since I have an Apple laptop, the minidisk doesn't work with my computer's self-loading CD slot. It didn't matter anyway, as the software was only written to run on a PC. Don't worry, however, there is a manual setup I could use with my browser and (essentially telnet) to log into the device to set it up. This is where problem number two comes into play. The instructions assume you want to use it as a router, which I didn't do. I wanted to use it as a hotspot (router features not enabled) but the instructions didn't say how to set it up that way, so I contacted tech support. After 45 minutes, frustrated by the language issues and (dare I say it) technical incompetence, I gave up. The next day I found a good article on Yahoo on how to set up TP Link devices as a hotspot and within 5 minutes it was up and running. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post a link here, but you can search and configure TP-Link and Hotspot and it should show up. We have excellent signal strength throughout the building and we couldn't find the dead. Stains. The speed seems to be the same as our wired network (only 10MB). We've found that the range extends even slightly beyond the metal building (through the windows, I think), so we got a little more than we expected.

Pros
  • Absolutely amazing!
Cons
  • It's hard to remember but it was number
