Review on Mongoose Mountain Bike Pedal Pedals by Mike Krzywicki

Revainrating 5 out of 5

1/2 " pedals that work well and won't break the bank.

These pedals were purchased to replace the plastic pedals on a Mongoose (Pacific Cycle) bike. 1/2" pedals come in two categories; cheap and plastic or expensive and alloyed. These pedals are the best of both worlds, cheap and lightweight. This is a great replacement for the one-piece Ashtabula cranks found on older bikes and department store bikes. Don't expect $140 performance from $14 pedals, but you can improve them. As with all cheap pedals (plastic or aluminum), the bearing preload is often too tight and will not spin freely. This can be easily adjusted to improve performance. * Only make this change if you or your mechanic are capable of such work. I am not responsible for the actions of you or your mechanic. *Remove the plastic end cap,Remove the small lock nut,Remove the pressure washer. Using a flathead screwdriver or pick, loosen the second preload nut 1/8 turn (there is no room on the preload nut in the pedal for a regular bushing). Assemble and check for factory settings. The pedal should turn freely, without play and backlash. Make sure the lock nut is properly installed and tightened with a wrench. If adjustment is too tight/loose, adjust/reassemble/check until pedal rotates smoothly/freely. Check again after 100 miles for safe/proper operation. Pedal axles are NOT self-tightening when in use, they MUST be tightened with a wrench before riding. you need 9/16" pedals", I would advise you to look for suitable 9/16" pedals. The adapters work fine, but the pedals are really old school (BMX/Cruiser) with loose ball bearings for 1/ 2" threaded cranks.
